Interview with B.A. Borton Author of Mrs Jones
Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.
Hi, I’m BA Morton, Babs to my friends, and I write Crime Fiction and Historical Fantasy, both with a good measure of romance thrown in. I live in the UK, in rural Northumberland, in a haunted cottage built on the foundations of a medieval chapel. In addition to writing I like creative hobbies, the outdoors, medieval history…and chocolate!
Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.
Mrs Jones is my first novel and it’s the first in a series about Tommy Connell a New York detective with a crooked smile, an eye for the ladies and a past that haunts him. Connell knows what the rule book says; he just chooses to ignore it. Assisted by his long suffering buddy Marty, Connell rattles cages wherever he goes. If you like a fast paced adventure with a touch of humour and romance, you'll love Tommy Connell. In this first book, Lizzie Jones arrives in New York to deliver a package, witnesses a murder and finds herself on the run from the mob and the Feds. It’s up to maverick cop, Connell, to unravel the truth surrounding the mysterious young Brit. As they run for their lives, he is inexplicably drawn back to his checkered past and an unsolved murder. It’s been described as an action movie in print and I think that sums it up pretty well.
Are you a mom (or parent)?
Yes, I’m mum to three grown up children and I’ve one very special grandson.
If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?
I’m lucky in that my children are all independent now, the last one flies the nest to Australia next month, but when they were small and I was merely an author in waiting, I did have to write mainly at night when they were sleeping. Now I tend to juggle more with my part time job. I find the hours between 5-7am quite productive and I’m usually still typing well after midnight.
Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?
Not in Mrs Jones, that’s all pure unadulterated fiction. But my next book Wildewood which is due out in September is based on historical events in medieval Northumberland and the Crusades and as such has been well researched.
What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?
Erm…I’m under 5ft tall, I have an O’level in pottery and a blue belt in Judo. I’m also a complete technophobe. Ask my daughter, she had to give me mobile phone lessons!
When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?
Hobbies…gardening, keeping chickens and walking the dog.
Guilty pleasures…Michael Buble’ and chocolate!
Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?
Currently, it would have to be Tommy Connell. He’s a lovable rogue, loyal to the end, but with more than a few secrets and a decidedly shady past.
If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?
The next in the series, Molly Brown, takes the characters from Mrs Jones forward by about 18mths. Connell’s on the trail of crooked cops and a serial killer. A vulnerable child with an obsession for the Wizard of Oz throws in a curve ball and Connell risks his life and his relationship with Lizzie as he seeks to save the child and the day. There are delicate plot threads which link this to the first story, and indeed to the third book, but all can be read individually.
What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?
Wildewood Revenge, the first book in the Wildewood Trilogy, is due for release in September. Molly Brown should hopefully be out around Christmas time. My current work in progress is Miller a deliciously dark thriller, with a very bad leading man. A ruthless bank robber gets more than he bargained for when he picks up the hostage from hell. Secret agenda’s, confused identities and divided loyalties with a love, hate relationship thrown in for good measure. I do love a tangled plot and I also think the ladies will grow to love Miller, even though they probably shouldn’t…

A British girl with a secret. A New York cop with a past. And a mob that wants revenge In the slickest, sexiest novel to come out in a long time, ruggedly tough and honest cop Detective Tommy Connell picks up an English girl, Mrs Jones, who claims to be the witness to a murder, and falls in love with her. Well, Mrs Jones, whoever she is, must be very attractive because an awful lot of people seem to want to get their hands on her if they can get her away from Connell's determined hands, including some organized crime boys along with the Feds.
Detective Connell definitely has his work cut out for him if he wants to end up with the body of Mrs Jones, dead or alive, that's for sure. All-in-all it's probably safe to say he hasn't a clue what is going on. It is probably equally safe to guess that Mrs Jones does. Not that 'safe' is quite the right word to use here.
