Dante's Awakening Vampires of Hollywood #1 by Devon Marshall
Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.
Well, I’m Devon Marshall, I’m Scots, born and bred in the fair green city of Glasgow, but at the moment I live on a remote and windswept island in the far north of Scotland. I write in the horror and dark thriller genres, mostly LGBT. I guess that my ‘Vampires of Hollywood’ series could be called LGBT paranormal romance/adventure, so there’s that too.
Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.
‘Dante’s Awakening’ is Book 1 in the ‘Vampires of Hollywood’ series ( published by Untreed Reads ) which follows the life and adventures of Dante Sonnier, a Hollywood agent who also assists the vampire community. Dante’s girlfriend, Ellis, is a vampire, but Dante is also attracted to Voshki, the vampire leader, although she doesn’t quite trust Voshki, who keeps a lot of secrets about Dante’s past…and future.
Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?
I have a manuscript which I go back to and work on every now and then…it employs aspects of people whom my father grew up knowing in the mean streets of 1950s/60s Glasgow and elements of the stories he told to me about them. One day I’ll publish it, with the names and places changed to protect the innocent ( and not so innocent ), of course!
When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?
I’m a movie buff! I mean, a real obsessed-with-every-aspect-of-movies geek! But for one unfortunate decision made on my behalf by someone else, I would have gone to film school, and who knows where or what I’d have been now. Even though that didn’t work out, I still love movies, and TV too. As for pleasures, oh yes I have those - beer, rum, cider, and Amarula figure prominently, me being Glaswegian and that birthright giving me a tremendous capacity for alcohol consumption - but I never feel ‘guilty’ about them!
Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?
Romance. I’m not a big romance fan, although I will read the occasional romance novel if it strikes me as being “different” in any way ( for example, I like the writer Q. Kelly’s novels, which are LGBT romances but with storylines that are not what you might expect from the genre - in a good way, that is ). I’d like to try writing a romance novel someday, just to stretch my creative wings!
Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?
I really enjoy writing Special Agent Erin Krueger in the ‘New Orleans Mysteries’ series. Erin is a dark character, but a complex one. She shares a past as a CIA operative with the protagonist of the series, Flynn, but Erin’s involvement with ‘the Agency’ is so much deeper and more twisted. As a result she has become both a cold-blooded killer who finds it easy to compromise her own scruples, and yet an ally to Flynn who is willing to go further and do more than most friends would. Also, she’s tough, sarcastic, and sexy - there’s a bit of the femme fatale about her! Although we didn’t learn a huge amount about her in the first book, ‘Voodoo Woman’, Erin’s character will definitely be developed in future books.
If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?
The next book in the ‘Vampires of Hollywood’ series is Book 2, ’The Right of Blood’ ( pencilled in for release June/July 2013 ), and in it we will get to know more about why the narrator of the series, Dante, is so closely linked to the vampires, and we also meet the family of vampire leader, Voshki Kevorkian. That has some interesting consequences for Dante!
What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?
I have a stand-alone horror novel coming out by the end of this year, ‘Snow Blind’, and Book 2 in the ‘New Orleans Mysteries’ series, ‘The Girl Who Sang The Blues’ is in the works for Spring 2013. I’m a slow writer because I get easily distracted and because I’m a nit-picker…I go over everything multiple times and change stuff before I even give it to an editor!

Dante Sonnier is a successful Hollywood agent. She is also a friend to the secret community of vampires living in Los Angeles, and occasionally she assists them when they have a problem that requires a human to handle it. The vampires are led by Voshki Kevorkian, a gorgeous, sexy female vampire, who has made it clear that she would like Dante to be her human. Dante, although attracted to Voshki, is wary of the possessiveness and jealousy involved in being a vampire’s chosen human lover and resists.
When the Children of Judas, a two-thousand-year-old sect of murderous, rebel vampires shunned by the main community, rise up under a new leader and threaten to topple Voshki’s leadership and expose the whole community, the vampires turn to Dante for help. Dante travels to a small town in upstate California where the Children seem to be active, in the company of Ellis Kovacs, another vampire sired by Voshki, and Voshki’s "right-hand woman."
There, whilst investigating the Children and their leader Robin Shepherd, Dante succumbs to being seduced by the alluring Ellis. When Dante is kidnapped by the Children, Voshki decides it's time to take matters into her own hands.
Hell hath no fury like a vampire scorned.
