Hex and the Single Witch
Vehicle City Vampires Book One
By Roxanne Rhoads

Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team (aka the P.I.T. Crew)

It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.

The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone. Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.

Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.

Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

Music and Writing: Double Alchemy with Susan Mac Nicol and a Giveaway

Music seems to be the one thing that can bring people together. I think that it doesn’t matter who you are- when you listen to a song, hundreds and thousands of people are probably listening to that song too at more or less the same moment you are, and that’s quite an awesome thought. Who you are, where you live, what your beliefs are, or who you love - nothing matters. All that is important is the sound of that tune throbbing in your ears and the tapping of your fingers as you try and write that next scene in your masterpiece.

Music enthuses us, gives us inspiration, and entertains us while thoughts of angst, passion, sexy antics, men in love and family life all spiral out of our fingertips, down onto a keyboard and hopefully create a story woven by music that others will want to read. Probably while they listen to music too. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Plato said - Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.

I rather liked John Lennon’s quote - Music is everybody's possession. It's only publishers who think that people own it.

When I was writing Double Alchemy, I had a yen to listen to some Celtic music so I could get a feel for the Welsh sorcerer Taliesin featured in the book. You can hear one particular rather haunting song, called Dragon Land, on the book trailer. So my playlist for Double Alchemy includes some instrumental folk music. I also love Indie Rock and some alternative rock- I’m all for loud, brash music when I write.  So I’ve got Kasabian, Muse, The Killers and IAMX, a real favourite of mine. Alex Clare is on there too, along with the great band, Imagine Dragons.  And with titles like ‘Human’, ‘Kiss and Swallow’, ‘Hear Me’ and ‘Demons’ I thought them very fitting for this book *grins* Especially the Kiss and Swallow bit.

There’s a little bit of a couple of my all time loved composers - Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky . There’s nothing Quinn likes better than relaxing to some classical music when he’s in the study saving the world and deciding what tough decision he has to make today. So he relaxes to violin concertos, the music of Swan Lake and some beautiful jazz suites.

Cade tends to enjoy the music of the moment and he’s a great fan of Nickleback and Foo Fighters so there are a couple of tunes in the mix especially for him. He also loves himself a bit of Ben Howard (if truth be told I think he’d like a little more of Ben Howard that Quinn would like him to have) so he’s on the playlist too.  I think Cade feels a bit of an affinity with Ben because as a surfer, he spends so much time in the water. My son Jason had the privilege of attending a very intimate gig with Ben (about twelve people in all) at a local venue but that was before Mr Howard became as big as he is now. But apparently he was amazing even then.

You can check out all the songs here on my Soundcloud account in the playlist for Double Alchemy.

Book Description:

Powerful yet tormented modern warlock Quinn Fairmont must initiate the silver-eyed Cade Mairston into the world of witchfinders, Withinners, and what can happen when two men fall truly, madly, deeply in love.

THE WORLD IN SHADOW

In modern London there lurks a warlock, Quinn Fairmont. Dangerous, powerful, tortured, sharing his body with the soul of an ancient Welsh sorcerer, Quinn is never alone—and never wholly himself. He fights against all those who would exploit his kind. He takes pleasure where he can find it.

In the forest of Hampstead Heath, Quinn’s hometown, Cade Mairston appears to him like a waking dream. Lithe, lean and silver-eyed, he evokes feelings in Quinn unlike any other: lust with true affection, immediate and shocking. Cade is clearly more than he seems. And yet, if a man of the world, Cade is innocent. He knows nothing of warlocks, witchfinders or Withinners. He knows nothing of what he is, what he might be, or what he might feel. For him, the story is just beginning. Magyck, peril and passion await.

About the Author:

Sue Mac Nicol was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. At the age of eight, her family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa where she stayed for nearly thirty years before arriving back in the UK in December 2000. She has written ten novels, two novellas and a screenplay since February 2012 and clearly believes in keeping herself busy. She has found herself wanting to stay in the genre that is M/M Romance so more can definitely be expected.

Sue is a member of Romance Writers of America and Romantic Novelists Association in the UK. She is also a member of a rather unique writing group, called the Talliston Writer’s Circle, which in itself has a story all of its own to tell and lives in the rural village of Bocking, in Essex, with her family. Her plan is to keep writing as long as her muse sits upon her shoulder. Her dream is to one day make enough money to give up the day job and get that big old house in the English countryside overlooking a river, where she can write all day and continue to indulge her passion for telling stories.

Interview and Giveaway: The Shade by Matthew Tallman

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I'm an employee for the federal government, I live near Dayton Ohio and this is my first novel. I write in the urban fantasy/paranormal genre, I've found it is the genre I can have the most fun writing about. I've always liked gritty crime movies so an urban setting seemed appropriate for my book. As far as pen names, I used Matthew Tallman, which is my real name. I debated on using another name but one of my friends told me that my actual name already sounded fake, so I stuck with it.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

My book—out now—is called The Shade. It's a paranormal/urban fantasy about a high school student who goes into a coma. However, while he is in the coma his mind and body separate, and his mind goes to a world called The Shade. The Shade is a story of survival and morals, about losing yourself and redemption. I wanted to create a story that would not only get the reader's attention but also make them think; hopefully that's what I did.

Are you a parent ?

I am a parent; I have a four-year-old stepson named Brady.

If yes, do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

I do, luckily my wife helps me out a lot when I'm writing. However, I believe it's hard to juggle just about anything with being a parent, it's one of the toughest jobs there are. There are times when I'd like to write, but Brady comes first so I have to wait until he's occupied or asleep to write—slowing me down sometimes. Other than slowing me down I wouldn't say having a child hinders me too much, he makes me smile everyday and I'd not have it any other way.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Of course I have, that's why I put the disclaimer at the start of my book. But seriously, I think all writers base some characters off people they know or situations they've been in. It's easier to graph an emotion if you've lived it. There's nothing worse than a writer trying to sell you on how a character is feeling when they clearly have never gone through what they're trying to portrait. Although this is not always the case, I've find it to be true in most.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

The Shade does have a theme; the theme stretching over the entire trilogy is redemption. Everyone has needed a little bit of redemption in his or her lives, everyone can relate to needing someone to say 'I forgive you'. I think people will get their own meanings out of the book; there are many little messages throughout.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

What people might be surprised to know about me is that in school I hated reading. I mean, all the way through high school I absolutely despised reading. It's funny now but it seems ironic that I would write a book.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

I'd really like to write a mystery, I've always liked detectives and would really enjoy writing a story one day. Other than that, I think I've got enough ideas to stick around in the paranormal category for a while.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

This is book number one of The Shade trilogy. Book number two (currently without title) is being edited as of now; it should be out sometime in the fall. The next book will take place three years after The Shade, picking up in a much darker place. It is my favorite of the three books; we explore a lot of the minor characters form the first book and get a deeper look at the world as a whole.

What book are you reading now?

Right now i'm not reading anything, mostly just writing my books. The last book I finished was The Walking Dead: Fall of the Governor part 2. I love the walking dead series, deep story and rich characters.

He presented the bowl to her, along with a spoon. “Eat.”

Nora dug into the stew thick with potatoes, chunks of meat, and gravy. The taste resonated on her tongue with the right blend of spices. Tonya would have appreciated the dish. She closed her eyes and savored the flavor before swallowing.

“I’d count myself a happy man if I put that expression on your face instead of my rabbit stew,” Clayton murmured the words close by, causing her eyelids to pop open.

Nora didn’t know what to say to what was clearly flirtatious remark. Instead, she ate more stew, even though the thought of rabbit made it harder to choke down the meat.

Clayton intertwined his fingers and gazed down at them as he spoke. “I’ve been warned that a person doesn’t force fate’s hand. I’d be agreeing with that, except, if fate didn’t want you to be here, you wouldn’t be.”

His bit of cracked reasoning had her almost choking on a potato. A hearty back slap sent the errant vegetable airborne. Blinking, she looked into Clayton’s concerned face. The firelight did nothing to negate the strong lines of his face or the lively blue eyes. Handsome he might be, but there was also sincerity, a sense of compassion that she often found lacking in twenty-first-century males. “How did you find me?”

His hand stroked his chin. “Well, I tell ya, it was no simple matter. I am growing older every day. I am nigh on to thirty-three.”

Nora pretended to be horrified. “That old?”

Taking her pretense for real, he nodded his head gravely. “Yes, that old, and there’d been no sign of my soul mate, despite my looking. I dreamt you were in America, but unfortunately the time I was unclear on. I left Ireland in search of you.”

Nora stirred her delicious stew, debating if she could eat any more of it knowing it was composed of creatures she was more used to seeing singing and dancing in children’s movies. “That doesn’t answer my question of how you find me.”

He lifted his eyebrows. “I see you haven’t changed much. Still demanding answers. I did some divination magick. Much to my horror, I found we were in two different centuries, both alone. This I found hard to accept. At night when my loneliness was at its peak, I searched for you across time, calling your name. Did you ever have a sense of me?”

“Well, at first I would say no, but lately yes. Your voice is in my head, making me wonder if I am losing my mind. I noticed it because it sounds like you and not my own internal musings. Why is that?”
Nora placed the forgotten bowl on the log. Clayton picked it up and stirred the stew before taking a bite that he obviously relished before finishing the rest in four rapid bites. He went back to the pot to dip up more food.

Noticing her attention on the bowl, he explained, “I have only one bowl. I know I should have bartered for another, but I wasn’t too sure if I could bring you across. Even now you are here only on the strength of my will and need.” He dug his spoon back into his bowl.

The idea that he could just snatch her out of time should have frightened her. Instead, it mesmerized her with possibilities. “Could I just pull Napoleon or Ben Franklin out of time if I chose?”

About the Author:

Rayna Noire is an author and a historian. The desire to uncover the truth behind the original fear of witches led her to the surprising discovery that people believed in magick in some form up to 150 years ago. A world that believed the impossible could happen and often did must have been amazing. With this in mind, Ms. Noire taps into this dimension, shapes it into stories about a Pagan family who really isn’t that different from most people. They do go on the occasional time travel adventures and magick happens.
