Witch Way to Turn Giveaway, Excerpt and Book Video

Excerpt:

“You Breena Cross?” The white guy closed the distance between them.

“Who’s askin’?” she shot back.

“The witch has attitude.” The black guy moved closer.

“Hey, who you calling a witch, ass?” She gripped her car key tight against her palm, ready to go for the eyes first.
It happened so fast, she didn’t even have a chance to use her makeshift weapon. The white guy pinned her against the car door and her keys fell to the ground.

“We got her,” the white guy said. His breath smelled like rotten hamburger.

She tried to push him off her, but he forced her even harder into the door handle.
“He’s gonna be real happy with us, Jay,” the white guy practically sang.

Breena wondered who “he” was, but only for a second, because the guy’s lips pulled back and she saw his teeth. They were flat but, somehow, they looked sharp.

Sharp? What the hell?

His gaze was a roaring fire of hunger. Predatory. It looked like he wanted to rip her throat out.

He made a low growl and pressed his lips to her neck. A sound like crazed bees buzzed in her ears, nearly deafening her. She didn’t know what to do. Her palms began to sweat and, for a moment, she thought the blue light would be her saving grace, but her hands only shook.

“Back away from her.” The man sounded calm enough, but his voice had an edge to it that meant business.

“You lookin’ to lose a fight?” Jay swiveled around.

“I never lose.”

He appeared out of nowhere, grabbed Breena’s attacker by the back of his shirt and threw him a good two or three parking spaces down the lot. The black guy froze in place.

Her savior’s ears sprang up through his hair into two sharp points.

The two guys got one good look at the pointed ears and hauled tail.

Breena didn’t blame them for running. She would’ve joined them if curiosity hadn’t got the better of her. Besides, it was hard to be too scared of someone who’d just saved your life and looked sexy as all get out. So what if he had weird-looking ears?
“What are you?” She fidgeted with the strap on her backpack, swallowing her nerves.

He smiled, revealing beautiful not-at-all-sharp teeth. “You can’t tell?” He sounded surprised.

“No.” She twisted her hair. “Should I be able to?”

“I’m not sure. I’ve had very little experience with halflings.”

“You didn’t answer my question.” Halflings?

“No. I didn’t.”

Annoyance chasing away the last remnants of fear, Breena let out a little huff. Was he trying to push her buttons?

He moved closer, his steps as graceful as flowing water. His eyes caught her attention immediately--a ghostly pale-green with a golden circle around each pupil. Standing by her side, he propped himself against the VW.

“Amazing,” he whispered, staring at her. His gaze was intense, and slightly bewildered, as if he were trying to solve a riddle.

“What is?”

“Your soul. It’s strong.”

Weird much? She shifted on her feet, eyeing the keys on the ground.

“Sorry. You must think I’m a crazy superhero-wannabe.” He shook his head and traced his finger along his open palm. “Your kind is so rare.” His eyes lit up as he smiled. He stooped to pick up the keys and handed them to her.

Breena snatched them and started backing away from the car as nonchalantly as possible.

About to run like hell? Me?

“You asked what I am,” he said.

She hesitated. Nodded.

“I’m a preternatural.”

Author Bio:

Karen Y. Bynum is an author of young adult paranormal fantasy.  Her novel Witch Way to Turn is published through Lyrical Press.  She grew up in Hickory, North Carolina where mountains and magic surrounded her.  Even as a child, she wrote her own faery tales and prattled incessantly to her imaginary friends.

After graduating from UNC Charlotte with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Communications, she went on to become certified in culinary arts from The Art Institute of Charlotte.  But it wasn’t until her aerospace engineer husband accepted a job in Virginia and they relocated that she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up.

With the support of family and friends, Karen embarked on a journey with the voices in her head.  They wouldn’t stop talking (yes, she does answer back) and their stories took shape.

Karen currently lives in coastal Virginia and enjoys reading, tweeting, writing and spending time with her husband and their spoiled rotten Vizsla named Rusty.

My Favorite Authors and Why

Hi! Thanks so much for having me today on Creatively Green. It’s such an honor to be here with you. Today I thought I’d share a few of my favorite authors and why. There are so many fantastic authors out there and I’ve not even scratched the surface of all the awesome the writing community has to offer, but there are just some who’ve stuck out to me as I’ve read their work.

1.    Karen Marie Moning
·       I recently spent the last month devouring The Fever series. For me, it’s by far the best series I’ve ever read in this genre. Mrs. Moning and the unbelievable ability to weave an incredible story and a hundred twists and turns and keep me needing to find out more. My emotions were all over the place with this series. One minute I was laughing, the next, I was mad as hell over what the characters were doing. I can’t wait to read the Highlander series next.

2.    Stefne Miller
·       I was fortunate to come across Mrs. Miller’s first book over a year ago. I’m so glad I did. Not only is she an awesome person—we’re total Facebook and Twitter buddies—but she is extremely talented in her ability to tell a story that inspires me and makes me think about my life and how I’m living it. Her stories are so honest and real… they truly are stories I wish the world would read. My favorite thus far is Collision.

3.    Stephanie Meyer
·       Meyer fueled my love of reading. I used to hate reading in school and never gave “normal” books a try. After a friend convinced me to try the first book out, I became obsessed with reading. I just couldn’t get enough of it… and it was a plus that I fell in love with Twilight. My favorite book would have to be Breaking Dawn.

4.    Maggie Stiefvater
·       I’ve read everything except her latest book- The Scorpio Races- and I absolutely love her writing. It’s lyrical and flows so beautifully on the page. Linger, the middle book in a series has been my favorite.

5.    Julie Kagawa
·       Wow! Julie Kagawa is amazing. She can create a whole world within a world and make you feel like you’re experiencing it all. I love, love, love her Iron Fey series (I have yet to finish the last one) but I would say so far, The Iron Queen is my most favorite.

Would any of these authors be on your favorite list? Tell us who some of your favorites are!

Blurb/Book Description:

At age twenty-three, Alex has had a hard life. His parents died when he was quite young, leaving his grandparents to raise him. Right before his high school graduation, his grandparents passed on too, leaving him all alone.

After losing everyone he's ever loved, Alex turns to the streets in a self-destructive pattern until he finally ends up in Springhill, where he tries to make a new life for himself.

Clair’s childhood was normal until age thirteen, when her father left the family and she never heard from him again. Consequently, her mother went into a deep depression, forcing Clair to grow up quickly.

After finishing high school, Clair’s heartache over her father’s absence as well as her unbearable mother drive her to strike out on her own. But having nowhere to go and no family to speak of, Clair wanders aimlessly from town to town, homeless, and without purpose. Looking for work wherever she goes and living hand to mouth on the streets is tough, Clair discovers, but living with her mother is worse.

Now twenty-one years old, Clair has found her way to the last place she and her family took their final vacation as a family--Springhill. While in town, she crosses paths with Alex and their ensuing relationship grows faster than expected. Soon Clair wonders if coming back to Springhill and meeting Alex was the best decision or the worst decision she ever made.

Author Bio:

Loni Flowers lives in Eastern North Carolina with her husband; two wild toddlers, who never slow down for a second; and three couch-potato dogs, who only raise an eye when foods around. She spends her days working full-time for a well-known bank. When she's not playing on the internet or chatting on Twitter or Facebook, she spends her free time with friends and family waiting for the next big idea strike.

She enjoys reading most anything, but is a sucker for a good romance story. Contemporary romance is her writing genre of choice but isn't opposed to writing something different should an excellent idea hit.

Some of her favorite authors include: L.J. Kentowski, Stefne Miller, Cassandra Clare, J.K. Rowling, and Karen Marie Moning, Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult... just to name a few.

THE LAST THING ON THE LIST
© 2012 Lee Rudnicki

INT. APARTMENT DAY

The phone rings.

KELLI, a cute 20something woman with short red hair, walks across her apartment and picks up the phone. The voice on the other line belongs to Matthew.

KELLI:  Hello?

MATTHEW:   Kelli?

KELLI:  Yeah. Who's this?

MATTHEW: Matthew. We were in marching band together. I hope I'm not bothering you.

KELLI:  No, not at all. I’m trying to remember who you are, exactly. Are you the guy in the Mets hat?

MATTHEW:  No, that's Roger. I am the guy who ... well ... ummmm ... I dunno. I played clarinet. My name is Matthew. Does that ring a bell?

KELLI:  No, not really. Look, I have homework to do ...

MATTHEW:  I'm sorry. Look, this won't take long.

KELLI:  What won't take long?

MATTHEW:  Tell me you love me.

KELLI:  Excuse me? Is this some sort of practical joke?

MATTHEW:  No, listen. Please. Tell me you love me. It's important.

The sound of drunken yelling in a foreign language comes over the phone.

KELLI:  What is that noise?

MATTHEW (V0):  Kelli, I have to hurry. It's getting late here.

KELLI:  HERE? What do you mean, it's getting late HERE? Where are you?

MATTHEW:  Czechoslovakia. Well, I guess it's technically the Czech Republic now.

KELLI: Matthew, what are you doing in Czechoslovakia???

MATTHEW: Well, it's technically the Czech Repu...

KELLI:  Whatever! Have you lost your mind???

MATTHEW:  Please. Tell me you love me.

KELLI:  Look, I'm not even sure I know who you are ... I thought you were the guy in the Mets hat. And I am supposed to tell you I love you?

MATTHEW:  Yeah. That's the last part.

KELLI:  The last part of what??

MATTHEW:  My plan. Can you please say it?

KELLI:  You have ten seconds to tell me what's going on, or I'm hanging up.

MATTHEW:  If I tell you, will you tell me you love me? Just once?

KELLI:  Are we on the radio? Is this the morning zoo?

MATTHEW:  Kelli, time is running out. Tell me you love me. Please!

KELLI:  Matthew. You tell me what's going on... and I'll tell you I love you.

MATTHEW:  Today was my last day.

KELLI What?

MATTHEW: I flew here yesterday. I woke up this morning and I went to a 500
yearold church ... I talked to God
...

KELLI:  You flew there to talk to God?

MATTHEW:  We argued, actually.

KELLI:  You argued with God?

MATTHEW:  Well, it mostly just me ... yelling.

KELLI:  Oh my God. You were yelling in a church?

MATTHEW: I had a lot on my mind.

KELLI: This is insane.

MATTHEW:  That's exactly what they said. A few hours ago, I watched the sun
set over the Castle, walked across the Charles Bridge in the moonlight. It was wonderful. And now I only have one thing left.

KELLI:  Which is what?

MATTHEW: You. I never had a beautiful woman tell me she loves me. I actually tried to get a woman here to say it, but things got complicated ... you know, that whole language barrier, currency exchange rates and so forth.

KELLI:  What the hell? This is crazy!

MATTHEW:  No. It's actually pretty well thought out.

KELLI:  So, when your plan is complete ... what happens? You turn into a
pumpkin or something?

MATTHEW:  Nope. I'm done.

KELLI:  Done with what?

MATTHEW:  Done. Just done. The end. Game over.

KELLI (upset): You're scaring me. Maybe you need to
talk to somebody.

MATTHEW: I am ... I'm talking to you.

KELLI:  I mean a counselor or something.

MATTHEW: Look, Are you gonna say it or not?

KELLI: Matthew ...

MATTHEW:  Look, I don't have time. It's two minutes to midnight.

Kelli starts to cry.

KELLI:  Matthew ...

MATTHEW: Goodbye Kelli.

KELLI:  Please! Matthew. Stop! Let's talk more!

MATTHEW:  I'm outta time.

KELLI:  Matthew ... I love you.

We heard a GUNSHOT, followed by distant screams.

The phone goes dead, and Kelli falls to the floor sobbing.

FADE OUT.

THE END.
