Interview and Giveaway: Colors of Us by Sandra Bunino

Hi there, Wenona! Thanks for having me on your wonderful site today. Wow – you are a busy lady. May I just say, I’m in awe of your Halloween boxes made out of toilet paper rolls. I love your creativity! :-)

Thank you, I like to work with what I have on hand. Sometimes a little creativity can go along way- for moms and writers :-)

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I’m in the romance business. It’s what I write and about 99% of what I read. I’m a sucker for the HEA. With a focus on contemporary romance, my work varies in heat levels from spicy to a slow but steamy simmer. Most of my back listed titles are adult novellas and short stories. I’m excited about my newest release because it’s different from anything else I’ve published.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Colors of Us is my first full-length New Adult novel. I love the feel of new adult fiction – it’s fresh, raw and gritty. Hunter and Michelle, the hero and heroine of Colors of Us, have their own demons to face. They’ve both had their share of tragedy and challenges but learn to overcome and heal as their lives cross and intertwine.

Are you a mom ?

I’m a very proud mom! I have three kids, two in college and a high school sophomore. They keep me on my toes, as do my two dogs, Montana and Coco.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

Life is a juggle, isn’t it? Now that my kids are older, they don’t require constant supervision, however I enjoy spending time with them as they move from childhood to adulthood. They amaze me every day.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I was a college professor and taught undergraduate Business Statistics, Accounting, and Corporate Finance classes to adult students.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book. I pitched an idea to an agent last year and she loved it. Now, I need to find the time to actually write it!

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Does a mother have a favorite kid? LOL My favorite characters are always the ones taking up space in my brain from my current WIP. Right now that’s Miranda and Alex from Passion of Us, the next book in the series.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

Yes! Colors of Us is book one in the McAvery Brothers series. Three sexy McAvery brothers give me enough material for three books, and one novella, planned in the series.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming book events?

I’m a featured author at the Hot Mojave Knights reader event in Las Vegas, September 25 – 27. I’ll also speak at the BookCon in Belmar, NJ and the NJRW conference in October.

What book are you reading now?

I’m finishing Carlene Love Flores’s Wicked Flower. It released two days after Colors of Us and is from her Sin Pointe series. Carlene and I have a similar style and I really enjoy her writing.

What is in your to read pile?

There are so many fantastic titles in my TBR pile right now. I’m looking forward to reading Rogue with a Brogue by Suzanne Enoch. I think I’ll save that one for the flight to Las Vegas!

Excerpt:
“I think pink is your color. It looks great against your dark hair.” Reaching past her shoulder, he curled a strand of her hair between his fingers and tugged gently before letting it fall onto her shoulder.
Meeting his gaze, she smiled. “Thanks.” Michelle wasn’t used to compliments. It’d been her goal to fade into the crowd and not to call attention to herself. But her self-imposed rules seemed to float away around Hunter McAvery.
Returning her smile, he continued the lesson. “After you slide your hands into the opening, you’ll wind the long strap around your fingers and wrist like this.” Holding her fingers in his hand, he wound the dangling strap around her palm and over her knuckles. “You want to protect the part of your hand that meets the bag.”
He stepped closer as he slipped the strap around the base of her thumb. When he brushed his fingertips against the sensitive area just below the fleshy part of her palm, a shiver shot up her arm and traveled to her belly. His warm breath ghosted her face as he circled the end of the strap around her wrist and secured the Velcro tab. Before she knew it, strong fingers captured her left hand and guided her arm to the warmth between their bodies. She itched to graze her fingers along his muscled chest, capturing his heat with her palm. Her gaze bounced to his neck and stubbled jaw, which clenched as he slid the other wrap over her hand. Slowly wrapping her other wrist, he secured the strap and held both of her gloved hands in his. “Make a fist,” he said huskily.
Tightening her hands into a ball, she tucked her thumb around the outside of her fingers like he showed her at the gym.
He squeezed her fists. “They look good. You’re a badass.”
Michelle snorted. “A badass in pink.”
“Let’s see what you got. Show me some upper cuts. Right here.” He tapped his abs.
“You want me to hit you?” She giggled.
“Sure. I can take it.”
Turning her palms up, she made a fist and alternated soft punches to his belly. His rock-hard belly. Each strike made her aware of how alive he made her feel. The force of impact sent ripples up his tight shirt, awakening the planes of his muscular form. She gulped back the desire to open her fists and run her fingertips along the line of each thick muscle.
His hands came to rest on her forearms, halting her movement. The pads of his thumbs stroked the sensitive skin near the inside of her elbow causing a delicious shiver up her arm. Michelle’s eyes met his. The fire brewing in his darkened gaze drew her in. Hunter stepped between her legs, nudging her back against the wall next to the mural. She closed her eyes and choked back a groan, wanting—no, needing—to grind her heat on his leg. Raising her arms above her, he pinned them against the wall on either side of her head. His scent flooded her senses as she lifted her chin to close the gap between them.
“I’m trying like hell not to kiss you.” Hunter straightened his back but didn’t loosen his grip on her arms.
Her skin prickled from the nearness of his body. She let her gaze drift to his lips. “Why?” she whispered.
He blew a slow breath between his teeth. “Nothing good would come of it. I’m not capable of giving or feeling… or offering anything much to you.” He shook his head but he didn’t move from her body.
“I don’t believe that.” Michelle wriggled her arms from his grasp. Her fingertips lingered on his corded forearms, which flexed under her touch. Easing a trail toward his shoulders, her fingers reminded her of a paintbrush’s first dab of color on a fresh canvas. She’d always believed each canvas had a personality of its own, and it was the symphony of the brush, artist, and canvas that created the work of art. She wanted to explore the blank canvas of Hunter McAvery.
She studied his arms, still caging her in. Protecting her. Wanting her. Her eyes met his gaze. He stared at her, unmoving, but a spark burned in his eyes. She held her breath, afraid to break his trance. Her palms smoothed over his shoulders and down his chest, stopping at the center of his ribs. Pushing into the muscles of his chest, she felt the strong beat of his heart on her fingers. “Kiss me, Hunter.” Raising her eyebrows, she dared to look him in the eyes, almost afraid of what she’d see.
“You don’t understand. You’re too… good.” He averted his gaze.
“Maybe you should let me decide what’s good for me.” She moved closer, his breath burned hot on her face, and he squeezed his eyes closed.
“Michelle….”
Her hands traveled up his chest and rested on the bulk of his strong shoulders. Pulling him in, her breasts molded into his chest and, finally, he crashed his lips down on hers. She met every stroke of his tongue as her fingers raked through the ends of his hair. Moaning into his mouth, she straddled his muscular thigh as warmth flooded her sex. She’d never felt more alive.
His hand grazed her cheek before taking her chin between his thumb and index finger and pulling away from their kiss. He tipped his forehead to hers, his raspy breath hot on her mouth. “Shit.”
Michelle widened her eyes. “What?” she whispered.
“You. Me. This just can’t happen. Not now. Not like this.”

Book Three
Danube Adele

Book Description:

Dr. Cecilia—Ceci— Bradford at your service.

I dance, rock climb, and have mastered MMA, because just being a twenty-six-year-old doctor isn’t enough. It doesn’t keep me from remembering the terrifying night my life changed, the night my true love died. I was nearly seventeen.

Life goes on, but the secret I keep is that I still talk to him in my dreams. That was getting me by until Tabron showed up—or, more specifically, until the six-foot-two brute of a Viking whisked me off to another planet because his leader is dying. And the joy didn’t end there. I’m being forced to choose a mate. The Brausa are facing extinction.

Tabron has no need for a mate, himself, and he’s told me as much. Multiple times. What he does have are hands and wicked lips that stir feelings I thought lost forever. Choosing him (just to play along until I can find a way home) seems to irk him and I find this surprisingly fun. But surviving a hidden conspiracy and the dangers of this alien place might be more difficult than I could ever imagine…

About the Author:

Danube Adele wrote her first romance at the age of seven when she penned the story of her dogs falling in love and having puppies. She’s been dreaming up romantic tales ever since. A lifetime resident of southern California, she spends time playing at the beach, camping in Joshua Tree National Park, and hiking Mammoth Mountain.

Always a lover of adventure, she and her husband took their sons on a cross country road trip to Florida and back in an old VW Westfalia, that had no A/C, in the month of July, and still, it continues to be the best trip they ever took.

Extensive travel and trying new things has kept the creative spark alive. Danube lives in Claremont with her biggest fans, her loving husband, amazing and wonderful identical twin sons, and a teddy bear of a Rottweiler.

Her debut novel, Quicksilver Dreams, Book 1 of the Dreamwalker series, was released January 6, 2014, and Dreams of a Dark Summer, Book 2 of the Dreamwalker series, is set for release June 9, 2014. The  next book in the Dreamwalker series is set to come out in December, 2014.

Interview and Giveaway: The Lost Colony Series by Jo Grafford

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release

Thank you for hosting me today! I’m excited to announce the release of TRAIL OF CROSSES, book two in the Lost Colony Series. It’s a pre-Colonial historical romance with a spunky huntress for a heroine and a fierce tribal chief as hero. This series reveals the rest of the story of the Lost Colonists from Roanoke Island, one of the world’s most intriguing unsolved mysteries.

Are you a mom ?

Yes. J Proud mother of three – one in college, one in junior high, and one in elementary school.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

I spend a lot of time balancing my laptop on my knees during soccer and cheerleading practice, band, trips to the park, etc. I know you mothers out there know exactly what I’m talking about.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

I hope to inspire my readers to dream big, then get out there and pursue those dreams.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I love to run, quilt, bake desserts, play the piano, and sing in the shower. Guilty pleasures include Bavarian chocolate, big salty pretzels, cream cheese danishes fresh off the bakery shelf, Movenpick ice cream, strawberry banana smoothies blended on the spot…I really could keep going with this list all night long!

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

Oh no! I should probably add this to my list of guilty pleasures. Yep, I have a weakness for vampires. Twihard junkie here. Go Team Edward and Team Jacob!

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

Actually, I write in several genres, and I’ve tackled two others besides historical romance this past spring and summer at the request of my own kiddos (YA paranormal and middle grade fantasy). I even test read the middle grade fantasy to an elementary school class, but I’m focusing on historical romance at the moment.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

The third book in this Lost Colony Series is called INTO THE MAIN. It will be finished by year-end and is the story of Agnes Wood, the apothecary.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Coming up next is a “short” called VIKING FOR HIRE. It will be published on or around October 15 as part of a sweet romance anthology called AUTUMN’S KISS: 10 SWEET CONTEMPORARY AND HISTORICAL ROMANCES. Don’t you just love a good Viking romance? Watch for news about this release at www.JoGrafford.com.

Excerpt:

"You want my help." 'Twas an accusation.

     "Aye."

His eyes darkened. "I save your life. I give gifts. I offer marriage." He closed the remaining distance between us, his eyes burning into mine.

     I stumbled back.

"You give nothing in return," he snarled. "You only ask for more."

"I would had I something to offer," I whispered. "But I have nothing. I am nothing."

"Then what use are you to me?" He wheeled away.

I sagged against the door, eyes stinging. I blinked rapidly and pressed a hand to my stomach. Nausea rolled at the thought of informing the others of my failure.

Manteo circled the cabin like a hawk stalking its prey. 'Twas a fine room with ornately carved shelves lining one wall. Bunks were built into the next wall. A generous desk jutted from the third, overflowing with maps and navigational devices. I recognized the compass and hourglass but could not identify the other instruments. I jerked in surprise when Manteo swooped down upon me.

"I know our location." His arms shot out and slapped the wall on either side of me, hemming me to the door. "I could swim ashore from here."

"Then why do ye stay if ye can leave and save yourself?"

"Governor White gave his word to deliver me home."

"We are going to starve, Manteo. 'Tis only a matter of days now."

"Nay. You alone starve. The others eat."

     "I have no appetite."

"You act as one already dead."

I straightened my back. "I accept what I cannot change."

"And I change what I cannot accept." He shifted his weight to the wall, one arm propped over my head. He drew his fingertips down the side of my face in a feather-light caress.

I closed my eyes against the rush of unbearable sweetness. He made me long for things forbidden. "'Tis within your power to help us. I am begging you."

     "Very well."

My eyes flew open. "Ye will do this for us."

"For you." His voice was silken, his features as hard as granite.

I smiled tremulously. "I thank thee, Manteo. Chief Manteo, that is." The new title felt strange on my lips. I beheld him with a mixture of awe and pride.

"I have yet to name my price."

     I stared, confused.

He grunted in disgust. "You refuse me as both husband and lover, so you are left with the hiring of my services."

I worried my lower lip between my teeth. At least he was willing to negotiate. His eyes flashed with lust as he followed my movements.

"I will entreat the Dares for payment."

"Nay. You are the one in my debt."

I raised and dropped my hands helplessly.

"You serve this company, no? You can serve my people, too."

"Ye would hire me as clerk?" Hope leaped in my chest at the possibilities. I would not have to part from him so soon.

"My people have no clerks." His eyes narrowed. "We have slaves."

My breath hitched. "Ye wish to punish me, humiliate me?"

"Nay, I only wish to marry you."

I briefly closed my eyes against the pain. He already knew the reason for my refusal.

     "Rose."

"Say no more. I will do it. 'Twill be punishment enough to see you so often and—“ I clamped my lips.

Exultation flickered briefly across his face. "You would give up your freedom to save your friends?"

     "Without question."

     "Swear it," he said grimly.

     "I swear it."

His eyes flared with emotion. He bent slowly 'til his breath stirred my lips. My eyelids fluttered closed. Heaven help me, for I had no will left to resist him.

"Now you will eat," Manteo commanded hoarsely. He stepped back, surveying me from head to feet.

     "Eat?"

"I have no slaves so thin and weak. Go. Collect your rations." He turned from me and bent to pore over a map on the table.

I reached for the door handle, disbelieving at the curt dismissal.

"And send for Anthony. I have need of him."

I glared at his back. Faith, should I press my face to the floor as well? "Aye, master." I bit the words out and fled.

Jane Mannering can shoot a rifle and handle a knife as well as any Englishman. However, she is no match for the red-painted warriors who ambush her section of a Colonial caravan the moment she and her comrades reach the shores of Virginia.

Jane plots their escape during a forced march inland, leaving a trail of maltese crosses carved on the trees – their pre-agreed upon signal of distress. All the while, she fumes over what interest their captors could possibly have in a twenty-three-year-old spinster and a rugged band of brick masons, sawyers, and farmers.
When the ruthless Chief Wanchese intercepts them at the crossroads of the Great Trading Path, Jane is shaken to discover their greatest enemy plans to keep her for himself. EXCERPT #2

My eyes drank in the massive arms and broad chest that tapered down to a narrow torso. He was nothing like the slender dandies in London who paraded about in excessive amounts of clothing. Nay, this man required no starched shirts and ruffs or padded doublets to enhance his frame. Silk hosiery and buckled shoes would have made a mockery of such unfettered male strength. The sun-bleached buckskins and well-worn moccasins were the only adornments a man of his ilk would ever require.
“You take pleasure in what you see, no?” He leaned towards me again. I backed up until the wall of the cavern pressed into my shoulder blades.
Of course, I liked what I saw, but ‘twould be unladylike in the extreme to admit it and grossly conceited of him to question me in such a manner. I straightened and returned stare for stare. The intensity of his gaze unsettled me. Though unsmiling, a wealth of emotions radiated from him. Curiosity. Interest. Desire. And ironclad determination.
“You mean to take me for yourself,” I stated in a dull voice.
Wanchese placed his hands against the wall on either side of me. “When I am ready, aye.”
I sniffed. “Then you are no better than the rest of those savages who —”
“Heathen and savage,” he corrected tersely. “A phrase I’ve heard oft enough in your own Queen’s Court.”
I scowled at the reference to his stint as a diplomat in my homeland. A fine time it was to rub my nose in his superior social status. Born into a life of servitude, ’twas ironic how my lot had not changed one whit on the other side of the world.
My chest heaved with the effort to control my alarm. Too tired to fight him off, I searched his face for any sign of compassion beneath the hard outer shell.
Humor deepened the color of his eyes as he rolled to his back in one swift movement and cradled his head in clasped hands. “You will come to me.”
“Indeed I will not,” I gasped, both relieved at the distance between us and puzzled by the game he played, a game for which I knew not the rules. “’Twould be unseemly.”

“Aye, you will,” he retorted, clearly enjoying himself. “Beneath your…” He nodded at the remnants of my gown. “… finery…is a passionate woman who is accustomed to taking what she wants. ’Tis I, methinks, who will be taken by you and not the other way around.”
